First look - AMD phenom quad core
About a year ago we bought an Intel Core2 Quad box that's been running our company website.
Last week I finally got around to upgrading my personal workstation and bought an AMD Phenom 9500, quad core 64 bit processor.
My first impression is wow! It always amazes me what kind of computing power you can take off the shelf. While I was doing the research for this purchase, I became absolutely astonished when I realized that Intel is still selling 32 bit chips and no one seems to care!
Warning, Rant follows:
Windows on a 32 bit processor can only use a maximum of 3GB ram. Most computers being sold today are filled to the max, with 3GB of ram. It's like its 1982 all over again, where "640KB oughtta be enough for anyone"
It goes on, because where's the 64 bit programs? Do you realize that older versions of Photoshop for the PowerPC could access terabytes of RAM, but the current Photoshop CS3 can only use 3GB? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!
Okay, Rant over.
Sorry about that folks, sometimes I know I'm the only person who cares about this stuff, but I gotta speak my mind anyway.
Cheers!
